The Construction Industry Development Board (cidb) in partnership with the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has officially launched its Certificate in Construction Management (CCM) learning initiative.
This gives contractors access to a practical industry-focused course designed to strengthen business performance and prepare them for larger infrastructure opportunities. The Certificate in Construction Management (CCM) is a flagship learning initiative offered under the cidb’s B.U.I.L.D Programme. Developed in collaboration with the University of Johannesburg the course combines academic excellence with practical industry experience to equip contractors with the knowledge and skills needed to build sustainable construction businesses.
The country depends on capable contractors to deliver infrastructure that supports its ports, logistics network and growing economy. The CCM course responds to this need by strengthening contractors’ skills in project management, construction management, financial management and business leadership.
Speaking at the launch in KZN, cidb Board Chairperson Khulile Nzo said the learning initiative demonstrates the impact of collaboration between government, academia and industry.
“The Certificate in Construction Management marks an important milestone for South Africa’s construction industry. This is a great example of what can be achieved when government, universities and the private sector work together to build the skills and capacity of our contractors.”
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, Marthinus Meyer, encouraged contractors to use the course as a stepping stone for growth.
“A certificate is not a finish line. It is simply your licence to start making a difference. We want to develop all our small and up-and-coming contractors to become the big players of tomorrow.”
The course combines structured academic learning with practical workplace application, covering project management, business management, financial management, contract administration, quality, compliance, and health and safety. Participants will gain practical skills they can apply immediately to improve business performance, strengthen project delivery and position themselves to compete for larger and more complex construction opportunities.
The launch brought together government leaders, industry stakeholders, contractors and academic partners, reflecting a shared commitment to developing a more capable, competitive and sustainable construction industry.
As South Africa accelerates infrastructure delivery, the cidb believes investing in contractor development through quality learning initiatives such as the Certificate in Construction Management will help improve project delivery, grow contractor capability and support long-term economic growth.
